Steps to Make a Claim on Your Home Insurance

Steps on making an insurance claim

If you need to make a claim on your home insurance, simply follow the steps below.

STEP 1: Call the AXA claims line on 01 858 3200 or 0818 7 365 24_.

Make sure you have your policy information to hand. Our claims team will ask for details about what happened, and in the event of theft, involving money, or malicious damage, they will send you a claims form.

If a loss adjuster is appointed, they will discuss all circumstances surrounding the claim with you and issue a report. If there has been major damage, like a fire and you can’t live in your house, our team may arrange alternative accommodation for you.

STEP 2: An AXA representative, usually a Home Repairer or a Loss Adjuster, may visit your premises to look at the damage. The claim is then investigated with a view to making a settlement. This can take time depending on the value and complexity of the claim.

STEP 3: The next thing you should do is take photographs of the damage and write down how, and when the damage occurred. If you need to clean up, it’s important to keep any damaged items and show them, if requested.

STEP 4: When completing a claims form, outline what happened and list your losses. Make sure to do this carefully, so it’s clear and AXA will be able to fully understand the incident.

STEP 5: Once the settlement is agreed and processed, we will normally arrange for one of our suppliers to repair, reinstate or replace the lost or damaged property.

In some cases, we may pay a cash sum for the loss or damage, this won’t exceed what our suppliers would have charged. The appropriate excess from your policy will be deducted from all claims payments we make.

Steps to Make a Claim on Your Home Insurance

Most people hope to avoid needing to make a claim on their insurance, and below we have listed some ways to ensure that your home is in good condition as well as tips to make sure you have the right level of cover in place.

Maintaining your property

It’s important to look after your home so it’s maintained in good condition. You should ensure your gutters are cleaned, your roof is kept in good order, your garden is tidy and any fencing is in a good state. Bear in mind that home insurance does not cover wear and tear to your home.

If an Insurance Assessor comes to look at your property when you’re making a claim, he or she will check whether your property is in good condition and maintained well to determine whether they need to deduct sums because items were already in a poor state.

So, if your property is well maintained they shouldn’t need to deduct sums for items you are claiming for.

Make a list of the items in your house

When you take out an insurance policy, make sure your belongings are covered. The best way to do this is to go from room to room and make a list of the items you have in each room. Don’t forget things like carpets and curtains. Write down the approximate value of each item, and if you can remember when you bought it, or its age. Keep the list in a safe place at home or give a copy to a relative or friend to mind for you.

Keep receipts for proof of value

Keep receipts for bigger purchases – this will make submitting a claim easier. A key tip to keep receipts safe is to keep them with your insurance policy so they are all in the same place.

Steps to Make a Claim on Your Home Insurance

Ensure you have the right level of cover

When insuring your home, it’s important that you don’t undervalue your house or the contents and belongings in your home. If you have to make a claim and you are underinsured, you could end up out of pocket.

Your policy documents

As soon as you receive the policy documents for your home insurance, read them in detail, to make sure you are covered for all of the belongings you wish to insure. Make sure you know what you are and aren’t covered for under your home insurance policy.

And if something does happen, remember our team will be there to help you.
